Sequential Anaerobic/Aerobic Microbial Transformation of Chlorinated Ethenes: Use of Sustainable Approaches for Aquifer Decontamination

چکیده
Chlorinated ethene contamination is a worldwide relevant health issue. In anaerobic aquifers, highly chlorinated ethenes are transformed by microbially-mediated organohalide respiration metabolism. For this reason, in the last few years, bioremediation interventions have been developed and employed situ for aquifer decontamination. Biostimulation has demonstrated to be efficient enhancing activity. The use of agrifood wastes that replace engineered substrates as biostimulants permits low carbon impact treatment part circular economy approach. present work depicts effects available bio-based discusses their efficiency on microbial communities when applied contaminated aquifers. As drawback respiration, there accumulation more toxic lower-chlorinated ethenes. However, compounds such dichloroethene (DCE) vinyl chloride (VC) can mineralized metabolic co-metabolic pathways aerobic conditions. sequential anaerobic/aerobic treatments proposed stimulate natural biotransformation activity achieve complete degradation aim provide an up-to-date revision transformation towards discuss application real scenarios futurable bioelectrochemical systems remediate

Recent field studies have indicated synergistic effects of coupling microbial reductive dechlorination with physicochemical remediation (e.g., surfactant flushing) of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zones. This study explored chlorinated ethene (e.g., tetrachloroethene [PCE]) dechlorination in the presence of 50-5000 mg/L Tween 80, a nonionic surfactant employed in source zone reme...
متن کاملNanoscale iron particles for complete reduction of chlorinated ethenes
This paper examines the potential for using laboratory synthesized nanoscale Pd/Fe bimetallic particles to reduce chlorinated ethenes. Rapid and complete dechlorination was achieved for six chlorinated ethenes: tetrachloroethene (PCE, C2Cl4), trichloroethene (TCE, C2HCl3), 1,1-dichloroethene (1,1-DCE, C2H2Cl2), cisand trans-1,2dichloroethene (c-DCE, t-DCE, C2H2Cl2), and vinyl chloride (VC, C2H3...
متن کاملMicrobial Decontamination of Spices Using Cold Plasma
Most of spices are produced using traditional systems. In unsanitary conditions, spices can contain large numbers of pathogenic microbes such as bacteria, molds and yeasts. Some microorganisms are known as human pathogens, which need disinfection mechanisms that minimize their potential harms to active substances in spices. Use of contaminated spices in foods can significantly decrease the shel...
متن کاملAssessment of the natural attenuation of chlorinated ethenes in an anaerobic contaminated aquifer in the Bitterfeld/Wolfen area using stable isotope techniques, microcosm studies and molecular biomarkers.
The in situ degradation of chlorinated ethenes was assessed in an anaerobic aquifer using stable isotope fractionation approaches, microcosm studies and taxon specific detection of specific dehalogenating groups of bacteria. The aquifer in the Bitterfeld/Wolfen region in Germany contained all chlorinated ethenes, benzene and toluene as contaminants. The concentrations and isotope composition of...
